Objective/Purpose of the Job:
The Milking Farm Systems Technician (Lead) is a hands-on technical expert responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing all milking systems and maintenance on a large-scale dairy farm, while also providing leadership to a small team of maintenance staff. The role ensures milking equipment operates efficiently, meets hygiene standards, and minimizes downtime and the general upkeep of the farm.
The technician will personally perform complex repairs and preventive maintenance while liaising with external contractors for project deliverables.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform maintenance, calibration, and repair of automated milking systems (clusters, pulsators, vacuum pumps, sensors, and pipelines)
- Service refrigeration and milk cooling systems, including compressors, plate coolers, and bulk tanks
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and automation issues on milking equipment
- Maintain system hygiene and ensure compliance with milk quality regulations

- Schedule and execute preventive maintenance tasks to reduce equipment failures
- Monitor system performance during milking sessions and make real-time adjustments
- Recommend and implement upgrades for improved efficiency and automation
- Monitor and service Deep wells and water distribution systems on site
- Oversee a small maintenance team (Refrigeration and Electrical Technician, welders, plumbers) on daily tasks
- Assign work orders, provide technical guidance, and ensure job quality
- Coordinate with external vendors for specialized repairs and installations
- Assist in training team members on troubleshooting and system care
- Keep detailed records of maintenance work, calibration, and equipment inspections
- Ensure compliance with industry and farm biosecurity standards (HACCP, local regulations)
- Serve as the primary contact for urgent breakdowns affecting milking operations
- Provide immediate troubleshooting to restore operations quickly
- Coordinating with the Stores to manage the procurement of supplies and equipment spares, while maintaining minimum prudent stock levels
- Participate in training activities when required and perform good housekeeping on all jobs assigned Perform any other related duties assigned including any other procedure or techniques to improve efficiency
Work Environment
The nature of this work may require work in hazardous environments, exposure to confined spaces, noise, dust, cold and heat. While performing duties of this job, would occasionally be required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools or controls.
Late work may be necessary as workload dictates. This may include weekdays, weekends, and /or holidays. Required to be on 24/hours call-out duty.
Requirements Academic/Technical/Management: Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor Degree in an engineering related field
- Appropriately recognized discipline of engineering training and certification from an accredited institution
- Minimum of two (2) years practical experience in repairs of systems outlined above, preferably in a dairy farming environment
- Project Management skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of mechanical, electrical and construction concepts
- Knowledge and understanding of contracts and procurement procedures
- Food Handlers' Permit
- Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and criminal history
Abilities; Skills; Experience; Aptitude and Judgement:
- Ability to interpret mechanical and machinery diagrams
- General manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude. Ability to use hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, drills etc and hydraulic tools such as presses, sockets etc.
- Ability to read blueprints of electrical circuit diagrams. Familiarity with electrical systems, tools, equipment, codes and safety procedures
- Working knowledge of Food Safety Management Systems, ISO 22000, HACCP
