Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting projects in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. The project, managed by Rio Tinto, is expanding underground. With a high demand of skills required to complete the project safely and successfully, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development and the prosperity of the Mongolian people.

The Opportunity The Senior Manager, Information Systems & Technology will provide direction to Oyu Tolgoi’s Management and Operations and its customers on technology solutions and assist in defining technology strategies, in alignment with Rio Tinto IS&T where feasible and practical, which enables alignment of IT with the business and operations strategy and maximize the net benefit of IT. Operational accountability for information technology services and delivery across all of Oyu Tolgoi.
What The Role Entails
- Lead, coach, develop, and manage the performance of a team ensuring capability development and operational delivery of IT services aligned to strategy and business needs.
- Attract and retain top technology talent, promoting diversity and inclusion within the team.
- Cultivate a supportive and empowering work environment that encourages professional growth and innovation.
- Full accountability for the day-to-day delivery of IT services and projects. However, as a trusted business partner, you will keep track of IS&T performance, support the various stakeholders in identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, addressing risks and issues, ensuring sustainable reliability, scalability, and security of technology platforms, etc..
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business processes and enhance operational efficiency.
- Facilitate feedback loops and advocate for the voice of the customer to continuously improve IT support and responsiveness.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive IT strategy that aligns with Oyu Tolgoi and Rio Tinto’s business objectives and supports the Product Group.
- Significantly participate in digital strategy development for Oyu Tolgoi, providing strategic advice and technology thought leadership to align with PG technology and digital investment with business priorities.
- Lead discussions on digital transformation, AI, automation, and emerging technologies to drive business innovation.
- Ensuring technology and digital investments deliver measurable outcomes by tracking adoption rates and business impact, working in partnership with Rio Tinto IS&T.
- Represent Oyu Tolgoi within the PG and functions at senior leadership level, acting as the primary point of contact for engagement and escalations, and enabling effective engagement with IT capabilities.
- Establish and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders, including Product Group leaders and Rio Tinto IS&T peers.
- Manage strategic relationships with external technology vendors and service partners, ensuring alignment with business needs.
- Extensive stakeholder engagement across senior levels of Rio Tinto.
- Collaborate with global technology teams to create a unified technology agenda.
- Drive effective collaboration and partnership that fosters consistency and creates a platform for standardization, replication, and reuse.
What You Will Need For This Role
- Postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or related field
- Relevant experience in comparable roles
- Strong leadership skills and strong technical background
- Over 10 years of progressive experience in IT roles with at least 5 years of leadership experience managing large and diverse IT teams
- Experience and knowledge of IT technologies
